Labor Day

Labor Day is calling my name. One last day to wear my white capris. One last day to enjoy summer, the last scents of barbeque floating in the air. One last day to embrace the heat before the cold takes over, forcing us all to close our windows and hole up in our houses, cozily reading by a fire.
But is this what our forefathers intended when Labor Day was created? Surprisingly, yes. Labor Day was devised simply as a day for laborers to rest. However you decide to rest is up to you.
There’s a little more history behind the day: basically President Cleveland proposed the day as a means of appeasing those in the labor movement following the deaths of a bunch of workers. The day was to be complete with parades and festivals, all which were to celebrate those who labor for their money.
Of course, Labor Day morphed into our end of the season, last chance to party celebration, with an intro to football thrown in (because, as we know, most football begins around Labor Day). Even so, our modern Labor Day still marks the initial purpose: a day to do whatever you please.
What do I wish to do on my Labor Day? I want to run 13.1 miles. Yep, I am scheduled to run my first half marathon on Labor Day, and I am both excited and nervous. Will I finish? Will I flop? Ah, only time will tell.

It was good weather too so I got a bunch done in the yard. The rest of the weekend was filled with a visit from the in laws. We had a good time. I am tired today though. Could have used another day off.
