Investing in Family: Memorial Day
Memorial Day for many marks both a time of military service remembrance and the beginning of summer. It’s often the grand kickoff to the outdoor activities of choice, with many people celebrating by throwing barbeques, attending potluck picnics and camping. It’s even a weekend that can be marked by tradition; some families camp every year, others host cookouts annually on the day of remembrance. All in all, this holiday can be deeply steeped in tradition, fun and sun.
For me, the holiday has never been marked by tradition, per se. When I was younger, the weekend was set aside for a few things: sun and birthdays. You see, my sister and I were born two days (yet three years) apart, and it was quite common for one of our birthdays to fall on the holiday weekend. So our holiday weekend was often dictated by the whims of little girls, whims which changed quite frequently; it was never a surprise to camp one year, picnic in the park another and mini golf the following year. We were not sisters of tradition, that’s for sure.
As we grew older, Memorial Day (and our birthdays) became much more low key affairs. Honestly, who wants a large birthday party with cake, ice cream, pony rides, piñatas, clowns and bounce houses after they turn thirty? Okay, maybe some cake. And ice cream. And I love to horseback ride. And a bouncy house after a few glasses of wine could be fun...
Ah, but I digress…
My point? Memorial Day can be whatever you want it to be. It can be a time of tradition. Or it could become overrun by the whims of your kids. Whatever happens, it can be a great kickoff to another wonderful summer season and an excellent way to invest in family and friends.
